FRONT COVER: Summer (detail) by Lincoln Perry, 1980, oil, 32 x 36. Courtesy Tatistcheff Company, New York, New York. FEATURES: LINCOLN PERRY by Eunice Agar. In Maine, Lincoln Perry is one of the young artists trained in the classical studio tradition who are searching the past for themes as well as techniques that are relevant to the late 20th century. This article describes how this successful artist uses many Baroque compositional devices in his allegorical paintings of groups of figures. RANDALL LAKE: REAL TRADITIONALIST by Diane Casella Hines. After studying painting in France, this determined artist went to the University of Utah to study with Alvin Gittins, a realist painter in the "grand tradition" of Whistler, Sargent, and Eakins. Now a successful portrait and landscape painter, Lake discusses his career and the chal- lenge of conveying the expression and personality of his sitter. LEE WEISS: LAYERING WITH A BRUSH by Mary Carroll Nelson. This Wisconsin artist uses an unusual painting technique to develop rich textures in her watercolors. By repeatedly flipping the wet paper on a clean, flat tabletop, she causes the paint to mix and blend, thereby establishing interesting colors and textures. The artist then paints in natural forms that might exist in this "layered" picture. A step-by-step demonstration is given. BUFFALO KAPLINSKI: PLEIN AIR ACRYLIC PAINTING by Mary Carroll Nelson. This Colorado artist paints bright, panoramic acrylic landscapes of the Southwest. Here he explains his on location working procedures and offers a step-by-step demonstration. THE WATERCOLOR PAGE: DAVID P. RICHARDS To create his still lifes and cityscapes, this Pennsylvania artist works in a pointillist manner, applying thousands of watercolor dots of varying hues. He explains his procedure in detail. SKETCHES FROM LIFE: GALE D. JONES by Robin Longman American Artist interviews Gale D. Jones, a visually impaired artist living in Nebraska who creates woven watercolors. BUSINESS SUPPLEMENT: THE NEW LABELING FOR ART MATERIALS, PART ONE: HEALTH PROTECTIONS by Joy Turner Luke Lake.
