Use a disposable nitrate type gloves, both hands. I also had a small paper plate, and Popsicle stick, cut on a straight cut for the end, so it was flat on my surface. I used this stick to add a layer of weather stripping on my Jeep Wrangler soft top. One side was on the canvas soft top, and this appeared to have great adhesion. I put a small line squeezed from the tube on the canvas top (it was flipped back, so the top was facing up, temp was about 80 and full summer sun). I then used the stick (fairly quickly) to smooth the sealant to a thin line, then let it dry. I also put a thin coating on the MD Black Rubber Weatherstripping (on top of the MD adhesive strip, which did not hold to the canvas on the first try). I let them set / dry of a couple of minutes, and then pressed the 2 parts together. Yes, you can get some stringy lines from it - but that is normal with any type of contact cement. I also had some lacquer thinner, and paper towels to help clean up the wet product. If you are really concerned where the product goes, put masking tape on either side, so you have a strip to put the contact cement, wait for it to dry, and then run a razor blade along the tape joint as you remove the tape.
