Additional Information
Taken at the height of the Civil Rights movement in 1961, this image remains an enduring and iconic moment that captures the activism and commitment that young protestors were exercising across the nation as calls to remove segregation from public spaces grew and started to be implemented. Freedom rides were organized throughout America and had racially diverse riders board Greyhound busses to break the color barrier and protest segregation on public transportation. This particular image was taken near Times Square and illustrates the dedication these protestors brought to the Civil Rights movement that began in the mid-1950s with prominent leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Freedom Rides were organized to protest the non-enforcement of the Supreme Court rulings of Morgan v. Virginia in 1946 and Boynton v. Virginia in 1960, in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that segregated public buses violated the Constitution. The first Freedom Ride left Washington, D.C., on May 4th, 1961, and was expected to arrive in New Orleans by the 17th. This photograph captures young activists who dubbed themselves "The Washington Freedom Riders Committee" and planned to protest outside of the White House when they arrived in Washington, D.C.
Freedom Rides greatly inspired groups across the American South to engage in direct action for peaceful protests to remove segregation and improve race relations. This image remains a powerful reminder of the activism and commitment shown by these dedicated young people and their beliefs in equality and fair treatment for all.
