Additional Information Pictured here in 1960, American Civil Rights Activist Ruby Bridges was the first Black American to desegregate the William Frantz Elementary School in the same year. She remains an activist committed to fighting inequality and racism across America. In 1999 Bridges became the chair of the Ruby Bridges Foundation, which was founded to promote "the values of tolerance, respect, and appreciation of all differences." On the first day of her attendance, Bridges and her mother were escorted by four US Marshalls, and the integration sparked protests by white parents in the community Bridges was taught for her first year as the only student in her classroom. 1960 was a critical year in the Civil Rights movement as it gained national attention and became more popular with young people who were urging change in the post-war years. Bridges desegregating the Frantz Elementary School was a turning point in the movement and produced some of the most evocative and iconic images from the time, including this photograph. Bridges was one of six children in New Orleans who were selected to desegregate public schools, and this action would go on to inspire future generations for years to come. This photograph remains an enduring image that captures a pivotal moment in United States history that marked progressive change following decades of segregation following the conclusion of the American Civil War.
