Additional Information Born in Puerto Rico in 1919, Lolita Lebron migrated to New York City in 1941, where she became involved with pro-independence activists and joined the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, becoming a leading voice in the organization for the following decade until her arrest in 1954 after she opened fire on the US Congress, wounding five members. Lebron was granted clemency in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter and returned to Puerto Rico, where she remained an active voice in the fight for Puerto Rican independence from what many residents viewed as what amounted to colonial rule under the United States following the cession by Spain after the Spanish-American war's conclusion at the turn of the twentieth century. Lebron's political views changed in 1937 in what came to be known as the Ponce Massacre when a group of pro-independence protestors from the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party were killed during a peaceful protest. Lebron's political ideology continued to evolve after she observed the living and working conditions Puerto Rican immigrants were subjected to when they arrived in New York City, including discrimination and low wages, especially for women from the Island. Lebron attended George Washington University for two years before divorcing her husband at the time. This photo remains one of the most iconic images of Lebron immediately after her arrest for the attack on Congress and remains an enduring part of her influential legacy. Lebron was highly influenced by noted Puerto Rican freedom activist Pedro Albizu Campos who remains another iconic activist.
