Additional Information Pictured here in 1954, this vintage photograph of the iconic American baseball player Jackie Robinson captures the legendary player during the latter portions of his storied career and the height of the post-war era while America experienced a period of significant growth and transformation. Robinson's legacy contains numerous milestones, but he is most well-known for breaking the color barrier in professional baseball when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers to play first base in 1948. Robinson had excelled in sports at UCLA and went on to become the assistant athletic director of the National Youth Administration, a New Deal project founded by FDR to promote work for young Americans. He played professional football briefly, but the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 cut his career short, and he was drafted into the Army cavalry. After being stationed at Fort Riley, Robinson was accepted into Officer Candidate School and eventually achieved the rank of second lieutenant in January of 1943. Robinson's military service was cut short by a fraudulent court-martial, and he was never deployed during World War II. In Robinson's first game with the Dodgers, he helped them win 5-3. Robinson became a controversial symbol in the early years of the American Civil Rights movement as efforts towards integration were gaining strength and tensions across the nation rose. This incredible photograph displays Robinson's strength and character and immediately transports the viewer back in time. This is a valuable piece of American history that depicts a truly legendary man.
