Additional Information One of the twentieth century's most revered and celebrated mystery novelists, Dashiell Hammett, is portrayed here at the height of his career, which would see many of his works adapted into some of the most popular and influential noir films of the nineteen fifties, a genre that would inform American and European cinema for the following decades with their distinctive stylized aesthetic and hard-boiled tales of detectives uncovering deceitful tales that often centered around femme fatale characters and their attempts to lure the protagonist into increasingly dangerous storylines. Hammett's The Thin Man and The Maltese Falcon have become two of the most important adaptations of his works in film and remain some of the most recognized noir works of the era. Hammett was born in 1894, and his experience working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency is considered to have left a considerable influence on his works, as well as his experience with the firm during his service in World War I. A period where he was dispatched to Butte, Montana,, to bust a strike which left the young Hammett disillusioned with the company and their role in defending non-labor rights and contributing to the further degradation of workers following the passage of anti-labor legislation in the years following the industrial revolution. This portrait bears a distinctive style and unique aesthetic that capture Hammett's spirit and immediately transports the viewer back in time creating an indelible bond between the past and present while celebrating the author's iconic legacy.
