Additional Information Taken during one of the most transformative times in American History as World War II loomed and the United States was starting to overcome the hardships of the Great Depression. The race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, was one of the most anticipated sporting events of the twentieth century and called the "Match of the Century." War Admiral had become one of the most successful racehorses following Seabiscuit's dominance for the preceding decade. Some forty thousand spectators were in attendance for the race, and it was also widely broadcast across the nation on local radio stations with an estimated forty million listeners. War Admiral was a 4 to 1 favorite and heavily favored by oddsmakers. At the start of the race, Seabiscuit took an early lead of a length by twenty seconds and reached rail position halfway through the race. This lead was cut down by War Admiral who briefly took the lead before Seabiscuit's jockey George Woolf led the horse to victory by four lengths in the last two hundred yards. The victory solidified Seabiscuit's legacy and earned him the title of American Horse of the Year. Seabiscuit was injured following this iconic race, though the injury was not life-threatening, and owner Charles Howard attempted to nurse Seabiscuit back to health in the hopes that he would race again. This race remains one of the most celebrated moments in horse racing, and this iconic photograph remains a link to this historic moment.
