Additional Information Pictured with his highly influential and successful self-help book "Think and Grow Rich," Napoleon Hill remains an enduring figure in the genre and one of the early developers of such works. Hill was born and raised in southwestern Virginia and became a journalist for his father's newspaper at the age of thirteen, a career and experience that would continue to shape his life for decades. Though he claims to have worked as an attorney, that is widely disputed by historians, and it is unclear that he ever performed any legal work for a client, though he was employed by former Virginia Attorney General Rufus Ayers, a coal magnate and political figure. This photo was taken in the same year as the publication of perhaps his most famous work, which was his fourth publication and brought him considerable success. Hill's philosophy revolved around the belief that the human mind is capable of achieving success through thought and belief, which in contemporary times has become popular as a form of manifesting real items or wealth. Hill would go on to emphasize this theory later in 1967, stating: "Anything the human mind can believe, the human mind can achieve. That is the Supreme Secret.... This is the secret known in bygone times; this is the secret which governs present-day accomplishment; this is the secret which will follow man to the stars. This is the secret of the ages."
