Additional Information
The longest-serving First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, is pictured here in the same year her husband, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, became President of the United States. He would go on to serve until his death in 1945, becoming the only President to serve more than two terms, due in part to the extraordinary circumstances of World War Two. During her tenure as First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt became an international icon. She redefined the role through her public engagement, global travel, and outspoken advocacy for human rights, education, and social reform. Her legacy helped shape the modern expectations of the First Lady's role in American life.
After Franklin Roosevelt's death in 1945, Eleanor was appointed as a United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly, a position she held until 1952. Her tireless work on behalf of human rights earned her the admiration of President Harry Truman, who referred to her as the "First Lady of the World." Widely respected for her courage and clarity, Eleanor Roosevelt became one of the most influential women of the twentieth century. She was known especially for her advocacy of civil rights for Black Americans in the segregated South, contributing to the growing movement for desegregation that would expand in the 1960s.
This photograph of Eleanor Roosevelt is a lasting tribute to her strength, vision, and enduring legacy. It bears a classic aesthetic that connects the viewer to a pivotal moment in American and global history.
