Additional Information Gertrude Stein remains one of the most influential and prolific female writers of the twentieth century, and her home in Paris became a meeting place for some of the most impactful and noted writers, artists, and thinkers of the avant-garde and progressive movements of the time. These figures would shape the face of Western culture for decades and included Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henri Matisse, and more. Stein was born in Pennsylvania in 1874 and raised in Oakland, California, before finally moving to Paris in 1903, where she would remain with her lifelong partner, Alice Toklas, until her death in 1946.
