Hemingway's literary style is one of the most noted of the era and is praised for its economical style and brief prose, which cemented his legacy in the world of literature. Hemingway produced the bulk of his work between the 1920s and 1950s and remains some of the most regarded American writing of the mid-century period. At the same time, Hemingway's reputation gave the author a larger-than-life character. Many of his works are considered pieces of classic American literature, and three novels, four short story collections, and three pieces of nonfiction were released posthumously. Hemingway was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1899 as a second child to Grace and Clarence Hemingway, who were well-respected members of the community. Hemingway served as an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I following his rejection from the US Army due to his poor eyesight. He was seriously injured in the war and would spend six months in a military hospital, which would shape his writing, and he fell in love with a Red Cross nurse who would spurn him and influence his later work.
