Additional Information The lead ship of the White Star Line trio of vessels, the RMS Olympic, was the sister ship to the Titanic. It was in service for twenty-four years, from 1911 to 1934, with brief periods being commissioned for military service during World War I, during which it served as a troop transport, also gaining the nickname Old Reliable after it rammed and sank the German U-Boat U-103. From 1910 to 1913, the RMS Olympic was the largest ocean liner in the world before being surpassed by the Titanic, which had the exact dimensions as the Olympic, though it had a greater gross tonnage. This iconic image of the propellers from the RMS Olympic not only illustrates the scale and enormity of the ship's size but also its significant role in transatlantic travel. Ocean liners were the primary method for cross-Atlantic travel before the age of aviation, and the RMS Olympic was a pioneer in this field. Its impact on transportation history is awe-inspiring. The vessel was built in Belfast, Ireland. It was commissioned out of Liverpool before it completed a vast number of successful transatlantic journeys before being decommissioned in 1934, when it was sold for scrap. This process would not be completed for over three years. This iconic photograph illustrates the transformative period of the early twentieth century, when the Industrial Revolution and numerous technological advances changed the landscape of society, especially in Great Britain and the United States.
