Additional Information After being submitted to the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," The Kid remains one of the most enduring works of one of the most iconic and transformative actors of the twentieth century, Charlie Chaplin, or simply Chaplin as he came to be known. Chaplin was born in the late nineteenth century to parents who were stage actors. His career began in his teens when he performed in Vaudevillian traveling shows in his native Great Britain. However, by the time of this image production, he had gained acclaim internationally for his original character, "The Tramp," who would change the face of the American cinematic landscape for decades to come before the popularity of motion pictures that included audio came to make his silent films less popular with theater-going audiences. Though his contributions are widely recognized today, Chaplin was singled out as a Communist by the FBI, and he was eventually exiled from the United States in 1952. Following these politically motivated events, Chaplin took residence in Switzerland,, where he would live for decades until he died in 1977 at eighty-eight. Chaplin's first experience on the stage occurred at the age of only five when he took to the stage to replace his mother, who had become stricken with anxiety and would never perform again and experienced bouts with mental illness for the remainder of her life. Chaplin's influence on cinema cannot be underestimated, and he is a true entertainment icon.
