Like the proof 1909, the proof 1910 Double Eagle was struck with the Roman Gold finish the blends satin and semi-reflective characteristics. As such, the issue is noticeably brighter than the matte/sandblast issues in the proof Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle series. The 1910 is one of the more frequently encountered proofs of this type, but it is still an extremely rare coin when viewed in the wider context of U.S. numismatics. Although federal records indicate that 167 coins were struck, many of those pieces were destroyed in the Mint when they failed to sell by year's end.
