Additional Information
Pictured here in his later years, this portrait of one of the most recognizable and original voices in early American literature, Mark Twain, captures the spirit and essence of his legacy, which remains one of the most influential and celebrated among any writer as his work in the latter portions of the nineteenth century helped change the American literary landscape and introduce modern and progressive ideas to the nation from a Southern perspective, which was highly influential for healing the nation's rift following the conclusion of the American Civil War. Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would become the setting for his two most significant works, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.
Born Samuel Clemens, Twain chose his penance after the process used on Mississippi Riverboats to record depth settings across the vast river. He worked as a riverboat pilot following his teenage years, working as a typesetter and writer for his older brother's newspaper. He used his experience as a pilot for Life on the Mississippi, and the river is woven into the predominance of his work throughout his entire career. While Twain initially supported American expansion into the Hawaiian Islands, by 1901, he became an outspoken advocate against the United States expansion and served as President of the American Anti-Imperialist League until he died in 1910.
This iconic photograph, with its distinctive aesthetic and unique style, immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. It's a testament to Twain's ability to capture the essence of his era and make it resonate with us today.
