Additional Information The 25th Infantry of American Soldiers, more commonly known as Buffalo Soldiers, were regiments of Black Americans that were tasked with fighting in the American West as the so-called Indian Wars began in 1867 and would last until the 1890s. They were primarily composed of Black Americans who had fought for the Union during the American Civil War, and they served across the American West from New Mexico and Arizona to Montana and all points between. They remain an enduring part of American military history, and their brave service has inspired numerous pieces of literature, cinema, and other artistic creations. Twenty-three Buffalo Soldiers received the Medal of Honor during the Indian Wars, and the group was celebrated for their distinguished service. These regiments would continue to serve in the First World War as well as the Spanish-American War in 1900, which resulted in the United States gaining control of Puerto Rico and, thus, most of the Caribbean, which was crucial for controlling trade between the United States and markets in Europe. Buffalo Soldiers also became Park Rangers, serving primarily in California's Sierra Nevada mountains. This iconic photograph captures the spirit of bravery, service, and dedication associated with Buffalo Soldiers and the mark they made on the United States military history. The unique aesthetic and distinctive imagery immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating a link between the past and present that gives the viewer a glimpse into a transformative period in American history.
