Additional Information First conceptualized before the production of this image, the Statue of Liberty was planned to illustrate the importance of the American Revolution and the role it played in inspiring the French Revolution and spreading democratic rule across Europe and beyond. The French were inspired by the American Colonialists' revolts and the Declaration of Independence, leading to their own uprising against aristocratic rule. The Statue of Liberty also stands as a monument to the abolition of slavery in the United States, with the left foot indicating a broken shackle to symbolize the freedom gained by African slaves following the conclusion of the American Civil War. Additionally, The Statue of Liberty came to represent the ideals of the American Dream as immigrants arriving at Ellis Island were greeted by the first image of America's ideal goals of Liberty and Justice for All. Initially, funding efforts for the statue were slow to gain traction, though following a campaign spearheaded by Joesph Pulitzer of the New York World these efforts quickly grew and eventually the necessary funding for the project became a reality and construction began on the Statue of Liberty. The completion of the statue was marked by New York's first ticker tape parade and since 1933 the site has been maintained by the National Park Service. The Statue of Liberty is the most iconic monument in the United States and remains one of the most popular tourist sites in New York City. This image immediately transports the viewer back in time, linking past and present.
