Additional Information Hunkpapa Lakota leader Sitting Bull remains one of the most iconic figures of American Indigenous Peoples who was killed following an attempt to arrest him by Indian agency police, which marked a significant moment in relations between the United States Government and Indigenous American Tribes during the latter portion of the nineteenth century. Following the conclusion of the American Civil War, the movement into the Western United States created tension between Indigenous People and other immigrants as territorial boundaries were threatened by settlers establishing farms and ranches as well as new towns and cities to supply these settlers. This iconic photograph remains an enduring part of Sitting Bull's legacy and captures him holding a symbolic peace pipe. He was born in the Dakota Territory sometime between 1831 and 1837 and, during his early years, became known as a fierce warrior, which led to his ascension as a leader of the Lakota Tribe. Sitting Bull would lead his band of warriors throughout the nineteenth century in numerous wars, including the Great Sioux War of 1876. After the discovery of gold deposits in the Black Hills, the region was permanently transformed by the arrival of European immigrants, which created further tension. This photograph immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating a link between the past and present.
