Additional Information Produced and published by Royal geographer John George Bartholomew this depiction of Egypt in the years following the Anglo-Egyptian War show the region in a period of significant growth, transformation, and modernization as the close of the nineteenth century neared. The completion of the Suez Canal in 1869 had expanded shipping routes connecting Europe with Southeast Asia while avoiding the costly journey around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. The British victory in the war would influence the regions? culture, economy, and government until Egypt gained independence from Britain in 1922. The latter portion of the nineteenth century saw significant investment in the region, and Egypt experienced a period of economic prosperity. Bartholomew came from a long lineage of cartographers and came to be known as ?Cartographer to the King.? His Times Survey Atlas of the World would become the most successful atlas project of the twentieth century. His work is celebrated for its incredible detail, accuracy and is among some of the most essential cartographic works produced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A memorial for Bartholomew stands in the Dean Cemetery in his birthplace of Edinburgh. On the one-hundredth anniversary of his death, Scotland proclaimed Bartholomew the cartographer that put ?Edinburgh on the map.? Bartholomew pioneered the use of layering color contours on maps to depict elevation and grade changes. His work also predicted the rise of the automobile, and he was one of the earliest producers of road maps and railway timetable maps.
