Additional Information Produced by Herman Brosius at only twenty-four years old, this stunning depiction of Brantford, Ontario, shows the city in a period of significant growth as industrialization saw numerous factories and manufacturing facilities founded on the banks of the Grand River. This unique birds-eye perspective served as marketing material to attract both residents and merchants. Known as the Telephone City, Brantford is the hometown of Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the first phone at his father?s homestead, the Melville House. The construction of a railroad in 1854 further expanded access to the city and spurred more population growth. Birdseye perspectives were a popular illustration style throughout the nineteenth century and bear a distinctive aesthetic and unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Since the arrival of European settlers in the 1820s, the region developed a unique culture that blends indigenous traditions and heritage with western culture. The city was named after Mohawk leader Joseph Brant, who allied with the British during the American Revolution. Brosius produced numerous works from his brothers print shop based in Milwaukee, and his focus was mostly on the Northern areas of America and southern Canada. However, he did produce works in Texas during the late nineteenth century. Though they were not produced to scale, panoramic maps featured prominent civic features and notable buildings. This publication shows the city on the verge of significant cultural, economic, and political transformation during the late nineteenth century.
