Item description

VERY CHOICE SURFACES FOR AN ABOUT UNCIRCULATED SPECIMEN. THE RAREST CARSON CITY $20 LIBERTY WITH LESS THAN 50 COINS KNOWN TO EXIST IN ALL GRADES. JUST TWO COINS GRADED HIGHER. The Carson City Mint commenced coinage operations in 1870 with limited deliveries of Quarters, Half Dollars, Silver Dollars, Half Eagles, Eagles and Double Eagles. Most of these issues are leading rarities in their respective series, but the most elusive in an absolute sense are the 1870-CC Eagle and 1870-CC Double Eagle. These two issues rival one another as the rarest gold coin struck in this historic coinage facility, although the '70-CC Twenty is probably a bit more highly publicized than the identically dated Eagle.
