Item description

15+ SEEDS SHOWY ASCLEPIAS SPECIOSA MILKWEED... 3 FOOT TALL...4" - 5" ACROSS FLOWER CLUSTERS HANDSOME LONG OVAL SHAPED SILVER-GREEN LEAVES. No other milkweed of this type, bears such huge flowers. Full sun and drought tolerant 2nd year. HOST for Western Monarch Butterflies. More vigorous than all other milkweeds. Gorgeous leaves... blooms SPRING TO FALL. FULL SUN / ZONES 4 - 10 / THRIVES IN DRY WELL DRAINING SOIL BONUS: DEER RESISTANT and FRAGRANT! Beautiful cut flower and once established survives in drought conditions. They have very long tap roots to help with droughts. Along with butterfly food the flowers provide nectar and pollen for a broad spectrum of butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. They are the perfect host for Monarch butterflies! The caterpillars eat the leaves, pods and tender shoots of the plants; as they eat they concentrate distasteful alkaloids from the milky sap of the plants that makes them bad-tasting and toxic to would-be predators. A Native plant from Western and Central Canada all the way to Mexico. Seeds should be sown in the fall or winter, or cold stratify in the refrigerator 1-2 months to direct sow in spring or start seeds indoors. I actually saw this growing in a crack in the sidewalk in Castle Rock, Colorado ! It was magnificent! Growing Showy Milkweed from flower seed is very rewarding. It is appropriate to sow Asclepias seeds outdoors after the frosts of fall have begun. The cold, dormant planting will aid the germination of the seed in spring when temperatures warm. If sowing Milkweed seeds indoors or in a greenhouse, refrigerate the seed for 2 months before sowing. The cold treatment will help to break the dormancy of the seed.
