Item description

Vine like annual plant with hairy, shallow lobed leaves and white flowers (unlike squash which are always yellow flowered). The vines can run up to 25 feet in length. The female flowers produce long cylindrical gourd like fruits that are typically straight, while others may be twisted or coiled up like snakes (giving rise to the name Serpent of Sicily). The fruits of the Cucuzzi are of a light green color with a smooth skin and can reach up to three feet in length. Despite having different colored flowers from squash, Cucuzzi are utilized in the kitchen much like summer squash and are best harvested at a length of 10 inches when they are still immature. Cucuzzi features a thick, tender, creamy white flesh and are not at all bitter unless harvested at large sizes. Cultivation: Needs a long, warm growing season. Prepare fertile, well drained soil. Sow seeds in spring/early summer after last frost in a warm, sunny location. Hill planting: Form soil into a 1-ft. diameter mound 3-4' tall. Space mounds 5-10' apart. On each mound plant 1-2 seeds. Row planting: See spacing info in chart. Keep soil moist. Fertilize as needed. Train to climb a vertical support for better air circulation, straighter fruit and ease of harvest or leave to sprawl on the ground. May need hand pollinating..
