Item description

? Up for sale is one 1-2-year-old bare-root Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) plant, 8-14 inches tall. The plant will be sent with roots wrapped in wet media during dormancy (October-April). After breaking dormancy in April, it will be potted in soil and shipped in a plastic container. ? This native species produces berries ranging from dark red/brown to black due to natural seedling variation (these are seed-grown, not cloned). The plant features distinctive drooping flower clusters in late spring and broad, egg-shaped leaves. While wild fruits are astringent, cultivated varieties offer improved flavor. Birds love the berries, and the plant serves as a host for Eastern tent caterpillars. ? Hardy in zones 2-10, chokecherry has over 20 regional names including wild cherry, chokeberry, and sloe tree. A member of the rose family, it has been cultivated since colonial times and was a staple food for Indigenous peoples, who processed the berries to reduce bitterness and prussic acid in the pits. ? The plant will be securely packed and sent with tracking via First Class mail (U.S. only). I prioritize early-week dispatch but ship daily during spring. Contact me with any questions. ? Your order will arrive in good condition. If issues occur, notify us immediately with details and photos.
