Multi-millionaire Howard Hughes bankrolled this picture mainly so guys could see the buxom Jane Russell in a swimsuit. Nonetheless, it is still an exciting, actionful adventure saga about an unlikely group of adventurers who attempt to salvage a Carribean treasure, only to be menaced by a variety of deadly perils including sharks, bandits, and a submerged ledge on which the sunken treasure ship is balanced.
200 journalists were flown to Florida to attend the underwater premire, and Jayne Mansfield, who is not in the film, showed up and distracted photographers. The song 'Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White' made the pop charts in two versions.
