Item description
Pre-viewed for quality and plays fine. Cassette looks almost new and box is in good shape with some normal shelf wear. It also includes the original postcard mailing list request from ADV films inside.
Letterboxed widescreen version in Japanese with English subtitles. Best watched in panoramic zoom mode on newer sets to preserve the subtitles that are below the frame. Out Of Print (OOP) and no longer available in any format.
Issei Mori's RETURN of DAIMAJIN is often confused with Kenji Misumi's similar titled film. Lord Arakawa holds the people of Hell's Valley in a state of virtual slavery, building a fort for future military campaigns. One worker escapes to his home village, but dies from the exertion of his journey.
Since no one else will make the trip, four village children set off across Majin's Mountain to show the oppressed workers, including their fathers, the path to freedom. Along the way, they encounter a host of natural calamities (including a snowstorm) and angry warriors in pursuit from Arakawa's domain.
In despair, one of the children offers himself in sacrifice to the God of Vengeance, a giant stone statue atop the mountain that is instead of being a giant behemoth like Godzilla, Daimajin is roughly 2 1/2 times larger than a human. The Majin then rises from the snow, hearing the child's plea but refusing to take his life.
As Arakawa begins to boil the workers alive in the nearby hot springs, hoping to learn the location of the shortcut through the mountains, which he intends to use for purposes of conquest, the Majin descends the mountain to square accounts.
The acting is very good and the plight of the children in this film never seems to be melodramatic. Plus the snowbound locations are brilliant and as any cinematographer will tell you, white backgrounds are the most difficult to capture and film in.
