Based on Peter O'Donnell's British comic strip character, the female adventuress MODESTY BLAISE. The film is perhaps best understood as a parody of the world of 'The Avengers' rather than as a campy takeoff of the spy film in the manner of Dean Martin's 'The Silencers', also released in 1966. Modesty (Monica Vitti) and her sidekick Willie Garvin (Terence Stamp) are recruited by the British government to prevent a diamond heist by the colorful thief Gabriel (Dirk Bogarde, who sips lavender-colored liqueurs from tall goblets with goldfish swimming in them) and his henchmen, among them McWhirter (Clive Revill), a budget conscious Scottish accountant, and the sexually alluring but sadistic Mrs. Fothergill (Rosella Falk). The film is not without it's virtues: while it has moments of campy humour, it also satirizes a faddish and amoral consumer culture and reveals director Joseph Losey's increasing impatience with conventional narrative.
