Item description
This is a VINTAGE, EXCELLENT Condition, hand-crafted โPapier Paper Mache Old Grandfather Man Wood Cutter Young Grand-Daughter Girl Folk Art Statueโ handmade in Mexico in the mid-1940s. Belonging to a friend's parents, it was purchased in Mexico City in 1947 and displayed in their den through the early-1970s when it was packed away. Recently rediscovered, it has been safely and securely stored for 40 years. It is in EXCELLLENT Condition and comes from a smoke-free, pet-free home. Standing approximately 14 inches tall, the figures are mounted on a wooden wood board base that measures approximately 7 7/8th inches long, approximately 3 7/8th inches deep and approximately 1/2 inch thick; it is NOT Marked or Signed.
This STUNNING piece of Mexican Papier Mache Folk Art is a beautiful example of this art form and is very collectible as it was made by a highly accomplished artist. With a GORGEOUS, MODERNIST design, the figures are highly detailed. Crafted with SIMPLICITY, the figurines on this Set have a graceful design that will add a FUN accent to any room! Both the Old Man and Young Girl have life-like, detailed faces and are made entirely of papier mache over a wire armatour. Hand painted in earthy colors, there is NO fading due to the clear varnish applied over top. This pair is a WONDERFUL example of this type of Mexican folk art and would be a SPLENDID addition to any library, den, office or living room where it can be displayed on a shelf, desk or table. Quite eye-catching, this hand-sculpted, papier mache artwork is quite collectible and both figures have FANTASTIC, REALISTIC facial details.
The Grandfather seems like a gentle old soul who is going about his daily business of collecting and selling wood. He has a face lined with worry and age as he tightly holds the hand of the young girl who has an innocent face that is filled with awe and wonder. Carrying a load of wood upon his back, perhaps they are going to market to sell wood so they can buy some food. The man's weathered face is kindly and detailed with grey eyebrows, a furrowed brow, wrinkles a grey moustache and curly grey hair. The young girl's face is unlined with rounded checks and red lips, her brown curly hair peaks out from beneath her head covering. The artist caught the moment well, and has artfully created this simple scene. They are both wearing tattered clothing that is draped over their thin builds - he is wearing a serape and sombrero while she is wearing a long tunic and has a scarf wrapped over her head; they both have open sandals upon their bent feet. As is typical, their hands and feet ARE NOT detailed which is a common trait with these simple papier mache sculptures. The craftsmanship is exquisite and this pair is a STUNNING example of this art form!
