COVER: THE MIDDLE EAST: WHAT NEXT?
TOP OF THE WEEK:
SADAT'S SURPRISE: ANWAR SADAT surprised the world once again last week. Only days after his dramatic
journey to Israel, the Egyptian President invited the Israelis, the two superpowers and other Arabs to a
meeting in Cairo. Newsweek chronicles the swiftly moving Mideast situation, reports on Israel's new mood and
examines whether Sadat can make peace without the PLO. Meg Greenfield analyzes Sadat's image in the U.S.
(Cover photos by Tom Keller--Liaison, Alon Reininger--Contact, Philippe Ledru--Sygma, Claude Salhani--Sygma
and l.A. Pavlovsky--Sygma.).
ISLAM ON THE MARCH: Islam means "submission," and in that spirit 1.6 million Muslims made the annual trek
to the shrines of Mecca. But this year's mood had a special fervor: the pilgrimage also served as a call for unity
and a return to Islamic fundamentalism.
TRUDEAU vs. LEVESQUE: Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau faces a host of problems--including a
sagging economy and a scandal involving the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. But most perilous for Trudeau--
and for Canada--is the effort by French-speaking separatists in Quebec to break away from the rest of the
country. Newsweek's Arnaud de Borchgrave interviewed both Trudeau, who said such a course was
"unthinkable," and Quebec's Premier Rene Levesque, who insisted that he would continue to campaign for full
"sovereignty.".
A ROYAL FIND: "It is the greatest discovery of recent decades," declared Greek archeologist Manolis
Andronikos. If Andronikos was right, he had brought to light the tomb of Philip II, who was the King of
Macedon-- and also the father of Alexander the Great.
ARTIST OF EROS: His paintings come from a kingdom of subtle menace, rich light and delicate eroticism,
portraying cool, startling nymphets. Count Balthassar Klossowski de Rola is known as Balthus, and his new
show in New York is a rare pleasure.
