Item description
The Structure of Probability Theory with
Applications, Preliminary Edition, Part 1 by Aram J. Thomasian (1964
Paperback)
Author: Aram J. Thomasian
Publisher: McGraw-Hill Book Company, New York, NY U.S.A. 1964
Aram J. Thomasian is Professor of Statistics and
Electrical Engineering Emeritus at University of California,
Berkeley. He developed this book as a systematic introduction to the
fundamental aspects of probability theory. His preface to this
edition states that about 70% of the material in part 1 and segments
from part 2 would constitute a one semester undergraduate probability
course.
This volume has material only for part 1. Author
assumes calculus as a prerequisite for the probability course. Part
1 gives notation and theorems of probability theory not usually
covered in a calculus course using discrete examples and probability
measures while part 2 continues the theory with topics in the
continuous cases. No problems for the reader noticed.
Title wording makes it appear that this edition with
only part 1 was published for a period of time before the full
edition could be finalized. Rare.
This copy has set on the shelf for many years. Opens
and looks as if never read, certainly not seriously studied.
Paperback has single reading crease in spine with square corners.
Interior tight, clean unmarked, except for ink stamped price
(as used by college bookstores of that era) in front end-pages.
Size: 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall, 371 pp.
Condition: Near Fine Paperback
Copyright 1964. No ISBN nor LCCN. McGraw-Hill code
64275. MSR = $4.50. Stated preliminary edition, detail of print-run
not found.
Notes
on Condition/Edition ratings:
Fine – means like new, but any
book produced over 10 years ago isn't “brand new”.
Booksellers needed some word to describe this...
Like New – A new book, no
marks no damage (except maybe remainder marks) except not
obtained directly from the publisher or in packaging from the
publisher.
Very Good – How you or I might
take care of a book, closer to “as new” than standard. Might show
ownership.
Good – How someone else might
take care of a book. Also referred to as “standard.” The most
likely condition
for books of this age
title, shows the book has been read or previously owned.
Acceptable – How a child,
student or a librarian might take care of a book. (Either trying to
make sure
someone doesn't steal it by
plastering ownership everywhere, filled it with copious notes or
a book that has been damaged.)
Poor – Combination of
“acceptable” factors above. Most likely with water damage as
well. Might have
missing pages (you should ask).
Near – Means “almost” in
an optimistic sense. e.g., “Near Fine” means very good, but on
the high end.
1st
Thus
– Unique somehow, maybe 1st
paperback,
new illustrator, misprint or even the 1st
edition.
A collector
might desire this copy.
