Item description
BITS OF CAMBRIDGE HISTORY
by Samuel Francis Batchelder
Harvard University Press, First Edition, 1930
Condition: Very Good
This book consists of four sections dealing with the early history of Cambridge University. They are titled "Burgoyne and His Officers in Cambridge", "Colonel Henry Vassall", "The Washington Elm Tradition" and " Adventures of John Nutting, Cambridge Loyalist". Accompanying the text are two fold-outs (a list of British prisoners and a map of Cambridge and vicinity) and seven illustrations. On the front endpaper, the (presumed) original owner of the book, Harlow Shapley, has signed his name. Shapley (1885-1972) was one of the most noted American astronomers; his important studies of variable stars and globular clusters contributed much to our knowledge about the Milky Way and other galaxies. He taught at Harvard University and served as director of Harvard Observatory from 1921 to 1952. [BITS OF HARVARD HISTORY is also available from this booth.) Some spine fading, modest spine end wear, one bumped corner, a bit of spotting on the covers and slight edge wear and scraching on top page edges ( other edges are rough and uncut, as published, which affects the individual edges of some pages). Pages are yellowed on the inside margins. No binding problems, all pages are secure. No dust jacket. This title is scarce; the Shapley signature makes this copy unique.
