The USS Haddo (SS-255) was a Gato-class submarine of the U.S. Navy commissioned in October 1942, which played an active and successful role during World War II. She conducted ten war patrols in the Pacific, during which she sank or damaged numerous Japanese ships?estimated at over 38,000 tons?disrupting vital enemy shipping routes. Haddoearned six battle stars for her wartime service and was known for her aggressive tactics and skilled crew. In addition to attacking enemy vessels, she performed reconnaissance and lifeguard duties, rescuing downed American pilots. After the war, she served briefly in a training capacity before being decommissioned in 1946 and scrapped in 1960. Her service exemplified the versatility and impact of the Gato-class submarines during the conflict. The Electric Boat Company, founded in 1899 by Isaac Rice, is a pioneering American shipbuilding firm best known for its role in developing submarines for the United States Navy. Originally partnering with inventor John Philip Holland, the company built the Navy?s first commissioned submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1).
