Item description
100 Trillion Zimbabwe Dollar banknote, issued by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in 2008. This banknote is notable as one of the world's highest denominations of currency ever printed.
Issuance:
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe issued the 100 Trillion Dollar banknote in 2008 during a period of severe hyperinflation in the country.
Hyperinflation:
Zimbabwe experienced extreme hyperinflation, particularly from 2008 to 2009, leading to the printing of increasingly larger denominations to keep pace with soaring prices.
Symbolism:
This banknote has become a symbol of extreme economic instability and the peak of Zimbabwe's hyperinflation crisis.
Current Status:
The Zimbabwean dollar, including the 100 Trillion note, was demonetized in 2009 due to currency collapse and replaced with foreign currencies for a period. In 2019, a new Zimbabwe dollar (RTGS Dollar) was reintroduced, and later, in April 2024, replaced by the Zimbabwean gold (ZiG).
Collectibility:
Although no longer legal tender, these notes are popular among collectors and are considered collectible/novelty items. Their value as a collectible can vary based on condition and authentication.
