Certified AU (About UNCIRCULATED!) Ancient Roman Coinage of Constantine II
EPFIG HOARD
ROMAN EMPIRE
CONSTANTINE II
as Caesar, 316-337 AD
C
under Constantine the Great, as Emperor, 307-337 AD.
BI Nummis c. 2.5 gm 17mm. Arles mint, struck AD 330-331.
From the Epfig Hoard
This coin comprises one of the coins found in the Epfig Hoard. Originally discovered in 2010 in the small town of Epfig, in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France, these coins were part of 110 kg of Roman treasure hidden away in three large ceramic pots. For over 1600 years, these coins were buried and kept in stunning condition. This Roman Coin of Constantius II has been graded in AU (About Uncirculation) condition by NGC. It is truly rarest of of the rare Ancient coins to have a pedigree stretching to the original time of coin in circulation including original find spot AND rated R5 Rarity in RIC (R5=unique/nearly unique)!
Obverse: CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C ~ Translation:
unabrigded--Constantinus Jun (-ior) Nob (-ilissimus) C (-aesar)?:
"Constantine the Young, Very Noble Caesar (prince)". laureate, cuirassed bust of Constantine II right, seen from the front--cuirass difficult to see in images--much nicer/more detailed in hand.
Reverse: GLORIA EXERCITVS ([The] Glory of the Army, in Latin), two soldiers holding spears and shields, two
standards between them, star between standards, dot between at center, mintmark SCONST (Secunda CONSTantina [Arles was renamed Constantina in 328 AD]) in exergue--Arles mint mark. much nicer in hand.
Ref. RIC VII Arles 350 R5 Rarity (Highest degree of rarity~unique/nearly unique) ~ this specimen also includes dot in center on reverse--unlisted.
Condition: NGC Certified Ancient and Graded AU (About Uncirculated!) with Epfig Hoard Pedigree Incuded. Much nicer with more detail in hand--difficult to show due to plastic holder causing glare.
