Additional Information
Proceed and published by prolific American cartographer and lithographer Albert Ruger, this stunning depiction of Springfield, Illinois, just two years following the conclusion of the American Civil War, shows the iconic city in a period of significant transformation and growth. As the State Capital of Illinois, Springfield has a rich history since European settlers began establishing communities in 1810. Illinois was granted statehood in 1818 and became the 21st State. Ruger was well known for his bird's eye perspectives, which were wildly popular from the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1920s. These illustrations served as a promotional tool for towns and cities across America and highlighted prominent civic features and notable buildings.
Abraham Lincoln called Springfield home from 1837 until 1861 when he moved to Washington DC following his election as President. Springfield is home to the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, which continues to be a major tourist attraction. During the American Civil War, Springfield became a major center of activity with regiments training under General Ulysses S. Grant. Springfield developed rapidly with the outbreak of the war as new industries, businesses, and railroads were constructed to support Union efforts against Confederate forces. After the war ended, Springfield became an essential railroad hub and a center for government and agriculture.
The distinctive style and unique aesthetic of this bird's eye perspective immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible link between the past and present and is truly an authentic piece of American cartographical history.
Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
