As the State Capital of Illinois, Springfield has a rich history since European settlers began establishing communities in 1810. Illinois was granted statehood in 1818 and became the 21st State. Ruger was well known for his bird's eye perspectives, which were wildly popular from the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1920s. These illustrations served as a promotional tool for towns and cities across America and highlighted prominent civic features and notable buildings. Abraham Lincoln called Springfield home from 1837 until 1861 when he moved to Washington DC following his election as President.
