Artist Clark Angstadt (1955-2022)-
Clark, a renowned artist hailing from Reading, Pennsylvania, was born and raised in the nearby town of Wernersville. His passion for stock car racing ignited at a tender age, frequently attending races at the Reading Fairgrounds during his formative years at Wilson High School. Following his graduation, Clark, alongside his brother Paul, joined the pit crew for John Kozak?s #31 car at the Fairgrounds?a role he continued across various tracks even after the Reading Speedway shuttered its doors.
It was during these adrenaline-fueled years that Clark began sketching race cars from photographs, honing a talent that would soon define his career. His early sketches evolved into masterful oil paintings as he refined his craft, capturing the sleek lines and vibrant energy of the vehicles with remarkable skill. Before long, fans started commissioning him to paint their favorite drivers? cars, propelling his reputation within the motorsport community.
As his name gained prominence, Clark?s artistry attracted the attention of local drivers, who sought his talents not only for portraits of their machines but also for lettering their race cars. His work expanded beyond stock cars to encompass drag racing, sprint cars, and NASCAR, showcasing his versatility and deep connection to the racing world. Over the years, Clark created pieces for an illustrious roster of motorsport legends, including Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr., Jeff Gordon, Rusty Wallace, IndyCar icon Mario Andretti, sprint car champions Steve Kinser and the late Doug Wolfgang, as well as NHRA legends John Force and Darrell Gwynn.
Clark?s most celebrated works adorn prestigious venues such as the Richard Childress and Richard Petty Museums, while several pieces honoring local hero Tommy Hinnershitz are displayed at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing. The pinnacle of his career came in 2006 when he was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Iowa?an accolade that recognized his unparalleled contributions to the sport through his art.
Clark?s legacy endures as a testament to his dual devotion to racing and artistry. He made sure to put the spirit of motorsport onto everything and anything, including canvas, tables, mirrors, benches, and racecars themselves. This truly made Clark one of a kind.
