Issued under the rule of Maximinus II (Daia), the 55th Emperor of the Roman Empire (308-313 AD)
Maximinus Daia became embroiled in the Civil wars of the Tetrarchy between rival claimants for control of the empire, in which he was defeated by Licinius
A committed pagan, he engaged in one of the last persecutions of Christians
Obverse features a bust of the emperor, facing right
Reverse depicts Jupiter holding thunderbolt and scepter, facing right, eagles at feet, with the legend "IOVI CONSERVATORI"
Jupiter was the chief deity of Roman state religion throughout the Republican and Imperial eras, until Christianity became the dominant religion of the Empire
