Additional Information
This photograph of Bishop Fulton J. Sheen, one of the most widely venerated figures in American Catholicism, captures his profound influence on religious culture in the mid-20th century. Sheen played a pivotal role in bringing religious philosophy to millions through radio and television, as mass communication became increasingly prevalent in the post-war United States.
Ordained as a priest of the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, in 1919, Sheen quickly gained recognition as a renowned theologian and later became a professor of theology and philosophy at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. In 1930, he began hosting his nighttime radio program, "The Catholic Hour," under the moniker Father Sheen. His influence grew further with the launch of his television program, "Life is Worth Living," in 1952, which reached millions of viewers nationwide.
In 1961, Sheen transitioned to his final television series, "The Fulton Sheen Program," which aired until 1968. He is widely credited as one of the first televangelists, paving the way for future religious broadcasters. The rise of televangelism in the 1970s and 1980s can be traced back to Sheen's pioneering efforts in using television to spread faith and philosophy.
This image captures Sheen in a moment of prominence in his career as he continued to expand his teachings and gain a following among adherents to the Catholic faith, particularly in the Northeast where Catholic communities had been established.
