Additional Information
Produced and published by the iconic Brown Bigelow firm, this iconic image was illustrated by noted American artist Jes Wilhelm Schlaikjer, who was born at sea as his parents emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1897. Schlaikjer became well known for his illustrations that implored young Americans to join the armed forces in the years leading up to World War II, and he himself served in the signal corps during World War I rising to the rank of Chief Receiving Operator. Following the end of the war, he studied art in Lyon, France, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
Brown Bigelow was founded in 1896 and was well known for producing works by the likes of Norman Rockwell as well as the widely popular Dogs Playing Poker series. The firm is still in operation, and the works created for the American recruiting efforts remains some of the most recognizable productions made in the pre-war era. They also produced calendars which, at the peak of their popularity, were being distributed to some fifty million homes across the nation. Brown Bigelow would become a notable employer of recently released convicts and develop the prototype for rehabilitation programs across America.
The United States Army Signal Corps are an essential part of the logistics and communications that creates and manages communications across the armed forces. The Signal Corps was founded in 1860 by Major Albert J. Meyer and was integral to the Union force's success during the Civil War.
