Additional Information
Though she was widely unrecognized in her time, Frida Kahlo's work has come to represent and be considered some of the most important art to come out of Mexico in the twentieth century, and her paintings are considered some of the most influential works produced by a female in the modern era. Kahlo's work was inspired by Mexican folk art, and her painting often explored themes of existence and identity, especially as a female in a largely patriarchal society that Mexico harbored in the early parts of the twentieth century. She was also influenced by the classic masters, including Botticelli and Branzino, as well as contemporary movements like Cubism and Neue Sachlichkeit.
Kahlo married fellow painter Diego Rivera, and the pair became one of the most iconic duos of the art world in North America during the middle portion of the twentieth century. They would travel extensively together across the United States and Mexico during their tumultuous marriage, which would last until Kahlo's death in 1957 at the age of 43. This portrait was taken by Toni Frissell, one of the most influential female photographers of the post-war era and was well renowned for her works that informally captured celebrities and other significant political figures.
Frissell volunteered to document World War II for the Red Cross. This iconic portrait of Kahlo captures her in the prime of her career in 1937 and remains one of the most iconic and enduring images of the influential artist in her motherland.
