Item description
With the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901, Theodore Roosevelt became the youngest President in the nation's history at forty-three years old. Roosevelt would go on to become one of the most influential Presidents in American history, leading Congress with progressive reforms combined with a strong foreign policy. Roosevelt led the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War, becoming one of the most noticed heroes of the war following the group's charge at the Battle of San Juan. Roosevelt's background was distinct from his predecessors, who were primarily from rural areas. Roosevelt was born in New York City to a wealthy family though he did not let this influence his role as President.
This etching was produced in the early twentieth century and captures Roosevelt's serious demeanor and reputation as a "trust buster" who forced the dissolution of a railroad monopoly in the Northeast as well as antitrust actions under the Sherman Act. Roosevelt was also responsible for ensuring the construction of the Panama Canal and engineered the United States' policy that allowed for the right of first intervention in Caribbean nations. Roosevelt's leadership and legacy would influence American foreign policy for decades, and he remains one of the most important political figures in American history.
Roosevelt's legacy is also marked by his commitment t preserving natural spaces, and he is responsible for creating many of the most iconic national parks, particularly the vast reserves in the American West, including Yosemite National Park, which attracts millions of visitors annually.
