Item description
Produced in the same year as the signing of the Vietnam peace treaty and the withdrawal of all American troops from the country following years of bitter fighting, this Central Intelligence Agency map represents a historic moment in geopolitical history for Southeast Asia. The withdrawal of American troops was controversial after so many years of the United States' commitment to battling communist forces from North Vietnam looking to take control of the entire nation. However, the root of the conflict goes back to the French colonization of the region from the late nineteenth century until the 1950s.
This CIA map would represent new geopolitical boundaries and illustrate the shift from a divided nation into one unified by Northern Vietnamese control. CIA maps were only recently released and provide considerable insight into the evolving landscape of international boundaries following conflicts across the globe. The Vietnam War remains one of the most controversial conflicts in United States history and caused a cultural shift in America during the 1960s and 1970s that would shape the nation for decades to come providing a catalyst for counter-culture and radical political movements to emerge in opposition to the war.
By early 1970, anti-war sentiment in the United States had grown considerably, with most Americans favoring withdrawing the troops. However, the presiding military and political leaders of the time felt that withdrawal ran contradictory to the years of commitment and battle that preceded this time. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical and political history.
