Item description
Abraham Lincoln dispatched this brief consolation to the widow Lydia Parker Bixby in 1864 to express his condolences for the loss of five of her sons during their service in the American Civil War fighting for the Union. This letter, along with the Gettysburg Address and his second inaugural address, is considered to be one of the best pieces of Lincoln's storied career and was printed in the Boston Evening Transcript immediately following Bixby's receipt of the correspondence. The message was frequently used in memorials and reprinted across media platforms, especially in the years following the conclusion of the Civil War and early portions of the twentieth century.
Lincoln remains one of the most respected and influential American Presidents, and his legacy has endured since his assassination in 1865. Lincoln was largely self-educated and became known for his impassioned speeches that led to his political success. His career as a lawyer led to his election to the Illinois House of Representatives. This would start an illustrious career resulting in two elections as President of The United States, during which he abolished slavery and led the Union to victory in the civil war.
This reproduction bears an image of Lincoln as well as the original text in Lincoln's handwriting and is an authentic piece of American political history that illustrates the considerable costs and sacrifices endured during the Civil War. This piece of Lincoln memorabilia immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates a link between the past and present.
