With a career that spanned more than five decades, Ella Josephine Baker remains one of the most iconic figures in the American Civil Rights movement, working alongside some of the most influential figures in the movement, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, A. Baker joined the YNCL group in 1931 and quickly rose the ranks to become the national director. Baker immersed herself in the progressive cultural movements found in Harlem in the 1930s and protested against the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, and supported the campaign to release the defendants in Scottsboro, Alabama. Baker began working with the NAACP in 1938 and would continue to be associated with the group for the duration of her career.
