Item description
Published and illustrated only eight years after the conclusion of the American Civil War, this detailed depiction of Louisville, KY, remains an enduring tribute to one of the oldest cities in America west of the Appalachian Mountains. The city's location on the banks of the Ohio River contributed significantly to its founding years, and the first European settlement was established in 1778. It was named after King Louis XVI of France by Colonel George Rogers Clark, who has several landmarks in the town named after him. In 1803, explorers Lewis Clark organized their transnational expedition at the Falls of Ohio across from Louisville.
The city is not only a historical treasure but also a cultural hub. It is home to the iconic Kentucky Derby, held annually on the first Saturday in May at the historic Churchill Downs. This event, attracting thousands of horse racing enthusiasts, remains one of the most anticipated sporting events in the United States. Louisville is also the birthplace of the legendary American pugilist, Muhammad Ali. At the time of this map's publication, Louisville had become one of the most significant cities in the American Midwest, developing a distinct culture and regional character that endures to this day.
This map's distinctive aesthetic and unique character immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible link between the past and present. Louisville remains one of the most iconic cities in Kentucky and continues to contribute to the region's character and cultural influence across the nation.
