Walker was among the most successful industrialists of the era and was grandfather and great grandfather to the 41st and 43rd Presidents of the United States, respectively. Montpelier’s economy steadily grew during the nineteenth century and was spurred on by a thriving manufacturing industry that expanded as rail lines were established in the region. Mills provided another robust economy that was facilitated by the numerous creeks and rivers in the area.
