Item description
Produced by noted American surveyor Lou G. Hare and cartographers and published by the W.B. Walkup Co lithography firm, this official map of Monterey County, California, shows the region in a period of significant transformation and growth as the nation neared the turn of the twentieth century and technology was rapidly advancing as the country continued to expand westward with increased accessibility due to the installation and development of new rail lines and transportation systems across the United States. Economic opportunities in the area attracted residents from across the nation,, and the region would develop into one of the most sought-after areas in the United States today.
Hare was born in San Jose, CA, but for most of his career, he was located in San Francisco. There, he worked as a clerk for the Southern Pacific Railroad before becoming a surveyor for the Pacific Improvement Company, working on rail projects across the United States. Hare was elected to become the Monterey County Surveyor in 1893, a position he would hold for the next two decades until his retirement in Salinas, CA. At that time, he explored an interest in photography.
Monterey, one of the original counties of California, achieved Statehood in 1850. It remains a vital region, with a diverse economy driven by tourism along the coast and agricultural production in the inland areas. This map, a lasting testament to the region's history, immediately transports the viewer back in time, forging an unbreakable link between the past and present. Its enduring relevance underscores the importance of Monterey County in the past, present, and future.
