Item description
ROYAL COPENHAGEN 1949 Christmas Plate
The Church of Our Lady, Cathedral of Copenhagen
is the subject of the Royal Copenhagen 1949 Christmas plate, the 42nd plate in the series that began in 1908 and continues to this day. It depicts The Church of Our Lady, the Lutheran (Church of Denmark) Cathedral of Copenhagen. A church has stood on this site since 1209, but the present cathedral was constructed 1817 to 1829. The famous Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen was assigned to decorate the interior of the Cathedral by creating the sculptures of Christ and the twelve Apostles together with the baptismal font.

The scene is embossed on Danish porcelain and hand painted in traditional Copenhagen blue under the glaze, approximate diameter 7.25 inches. The inscription includes the date 1949 and the word JUL -- the Danish word for CHRISTMAS, pronounced like the English word YULE. Appropriately marked on the back including the three wavy line trademark of Royal Copenhagen. Pierced foot for hanging wire. Artwork by Hans Henrik Hansen. Book Value (2004) was $180 to $280.
EXCELLENT CONDITION (no chips, cracks, or repairs) and FIRST QUALITY (no scratch through trademark). All photos are of the ACTUAL PLATE you will receive, not the stock photos used by some sellers.
