Hand In Hand of England The Hand In Hand Fire and Life Insurance Society was founded in 1696 at Tom's Coffee House in St Martin's Lane in London. It was one of three fire insurance companies started after the Great Fire of London, England and it was initially called the Contributors for Insuring Houses, Chambers or Rooms from Loss by Fire, by Amicable Contribution. In 1905, the Hand in Hand was acquired by the Commercial Union Group. Hand in Hand was England second insurance company and is the better know than the first one. In fact, the image of their fire mark is the one that is on the cover of Brian Wright's "British Fire Mark" book. Their original mark was of lead construction measuring approximately 7 3/4" X 8 1/4" with three mounting holes. . This Hand In Hand of England fire mark is of metal (appears to be Pewter) construction and measures approximately 6?X 7 1/4?. It was cast in Darlington, County Durham, England. The mark is in good condition, with signs of age and usage, which gives a nice vintage look and feel to it. This is a really nice item and one that is not often seen for sale. It would make an excellent addition for any collector of fire marks, insurance company memorabilia, or a great gift for a firefighter, insurance agent/broker, or an insurance company employee/retiree.
